History of the Auckland Rugby League Fox Memorial Shield
|
What is the Fox Memorial?
The Fox Memorial is Auckland’s premier inter-club rugby league championship. Since 1931, the winners have received the Fox Memorial Shield, named in honour of Edward Vincent Fox, who passed away in 1930 as a result of wounds suffered during the First World War. Fox was an outstanding player in the pre-war North Shore backlines and represented Auckland against the touring England side in 1914 before enlisting. While serving overseas he was awarded the Military Medal and promoted to sergeant, but leg wounds ultimately ended his playing career. Determined to keep contributing to the game, Fox later served on the Auckland Rugby League executive and became both an Auckland and New Zealand selector. Richmond’s junior club was established in 1913, with the senior club joining in 1914. Richmond claimed its first Fox Memorial premiership in 1934 and has gone on to win 12 championships. Only Mt Albert (15), Otahuhu (13) and Ponsonby (12) have recorded as many or more titles, placing Richmond among the competition’s most successful and historic clubs.
