The Richmond Premier 1st are now in to the second game of round 2 after drawing with the Marist Saints last week. The team training was focused on ball control, defence and reducing handling errors as the coaching team were expecting rugged wet weather football. The Premiers had a number of injuries so Fu’e Lomi and Junior Uale were promoted as cover. Co-coaches Henry Solomona and Bernard Vaihu named a strong side with a few Premier players returning from injury including: Isala Peau.

Richmond played the Otahuhu Leopards at Grey Lynn Park on Saturday 25th June, 12.45pm kick off. The pitch was wet and soggy even though Grey Lynn Park fields are sand based. 15 minutes into the first stanza Otahuhu scored an unconverted try in the corner.

20 meters from the visitors try line Sau Amosa threw a big dummy pass and ran through the defensive line. With 10 meters out Sau slid through on the wet and soggy ground with momentum carrying him across the try line. A missed conversion attempt with scores locked up 4 all with 10 minutes to go in the first half.

The very next set Sau received a short ball from Josh Sioasi with Sau sliding again in close to the posts for his second try. This time converting his try to take the Richmond team 10-04 at the half time break.

The weather continued to fall heavily making the ball slippery in the second half. Otahuhu received a penalty and attacked the Richmond goal line. Richmond defence held out 3 sets of 6 tackles. Otahuhu finally got through close to the posts which was converted, 10 all.

Richmond started to roll its bench with 20 minutes remaining with young Vae Kalolo coming from the bench. Even the big unit was trying to find traction on the wet field. Otahuhu played smart with depth kicking catching the Richmond wingers and fullback by surprise. Within 3 tackles Otahuhu were 10 meters out from the Richmond try  line and they scored by the post and they got the kick , with less than 10 minutes to go it was 16 – 10 to Otahuhu.

Otahuhu made a few breaks down the  side line, but our  defence was very good as we were tackling ball and all. We had at least 3 sets of 6 and attacked our goal line but we couldn’t get through . Otahuhu started to play the ball slowly and we received a penalty in our half with 2 minutes to go . With a minute gone already we started to throw the ball around , with time up  and last tackle we threw the ball around from one side to the other and the ball reached Waisale  (our fijian import ) he scored in the corner hooter went  score now was 16-14 to Otahuhu with kick to come.

Sau had to kick right on the side line just outside the club. There was silence as you can hear a pin drop. He took 5 paces  back and  3 strides to the left , he walked in connected well and it went over down the middle.

Final score 16 all.

The Richmond Premier 1st played the Marist Saints on Saturday 18 June at Murray Halberg Park.

Marist came out firing after we beat them in the first round right on the hooter.
The Premier 1st team had three players promoted to the Topside due to player injuries including: Cheydan Mani, Tai and Tamu. The Premier 1st squad were tough in training and all working hard to secure a jersey to play against our local rival, the Marist Saints.

In the first 30 minute stanza Richmond were down 2-0 to Marist before
Onelani scored under the post, converted by Sau, 6-2 to Richmond. Richmond Halves Poi & Sau were guiding the boys around the field well which led to a try to our Fijian flyer Weis who ran away beating five would be Marist tacklers on his way to scoring under the post. Sau converted heading with a 12-2 lead at half time.

The second half started with Marist scoring a converted try up the mid field, 12-8  to Richmond. Richmond changed the momentum with rolling forward substitutes with great impact from young Vae Kalolo, Ron and Harry Vete. Richmond scored two tries to Fu’e and a double to Onelani. Sau converted one of two tries to lead 22-8 with 15 minutes remaining.

Richmond tried to defend its 22 point lead where Marist capitalized from Richmond's missed tackles and handling errors to post a converted try,. 22-14 to Richmond. Momentum had swung. Marist went on to score an unconverted try out wide 22-18 with 3 minutes to go.

From kick off Marist shifted the ball to the other side which caught Richmond off guard. A further Marist penalty allowed Marist to score 10 metres left of the Richmond goal post. The final hooter had sounded and it was 22 all. Marist had to convert the try to win the game. "You could hear a pin drop at Murray Hallberg" says co-coach Henry Solomona. The Marist kicker came in nice and slow, struck the ball and hooked the ball to the right missing the conversion. Final score: 22 all draw.

Our next match is at Grey Lynn Park against Otahuhu Leopards on Saturday 25 June 2016

Player of the Day – Onelani Pongi

The Richmond Premier 1st played the Point Chevalier Pirates on Saturday 21 May 2016 at Walker Park. This was a local derby and Pt Chev were second on the Premier 1st table. A great challenge was set by the team coaches where the team had a good week in training selecting a competitively spirited 17 players to represent Richmond.

15 minutes into the first half Pt Chev score 12 unanswered points. The home team capitalized on Richmond's handling errors and missed tackles. Richmond manged to score in the corner with some quick passing from our left side backs thanks to an unconverted Teanu Henry try, 12-4. Richmond scored a converted try through some slick Issac Ah Kuoi running from dummy half, 12-10 to Point Chev.

The second half started with very strong wind. Richmond defended the goal line very well with Pt Chev attacking at will. Richmond held off the dominating Pirates and once in possession Richmond played smart football with dummy half running and early kick, chase, defend sets. Richmond quickly rotated its bench forward players giving the Bulldogs much needed grunt and momentum. Richmond went on to score a try thanks to Fu’e Lomi, converted by Tamu, 16-12 to Richmond.

Wiith 15 minutes to play
Pt Chev started to throw the ball around and twice they were denied tries due to double movement errors. The Richmond team were running on tired legs with very little in the tank. Luckily that Richmond spirit kept the team in control as the team were jumping up with joy that their efforts meant they came away with a 16 – 12 win.

Surrey Hotel Player of the Day was awarded to the whole team.
