Board of Directors. Warriors NRLW captain Georgia Hale and Knights NRL star Connor Watson have been awarded Veronica White and Ken Stephen medals for their community work. The pair were honoured in a ceremony at ANZ Stadium before the Telstra Premiership grand final on Sunday. Hale, in addition to being a wonderful role model and trailblazer on the field, is constantly helping others with genuine passion via her role as the Warriors’ community coordinator. The lock was also nominated for last year’s Veronica White Medal. The 25-year-old, who was named the 2020 Young New Zealander of the Year, has made a difference on countless school visits. Hale has been devoted to assisting rural communities, children, the intellectually disabled and a variety of charities. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the club’s outreach programs, but Hale continued to assist through Zoom calls as well as her own food-bank collections and wellbeing sessions with friends and family. “We couldn’t be prouder of Georgia. She brings enormous credit on herself in the most selfless manner,” Warriors CEO Cameron George said when Hale was named Young New Zealander of the Year. NRL CEO Andrew Abdo paid tribute to Watson and Hale and said both were exceptional ambassadors for rugby league. “It is so fitting for us to showcase these two exceptional people on our biggest day of the year,” Mr Abdo said. “So many of our players undertake a significant amount of work off the field – much of it done very quietly – tonight was our chance to acknowledge that work. Rugby League brings communities together and Connor and Georgia have led the way in 2020.” The Ken Stephen Medal is brought to you by My Property Consultants while the Veronica White Medal is supported by Apprenticeship Careers Australia. Both medals are part of the Kayo NRL Community Awards 2020. The competition only went for a month but for 2020 Karyn Murphy Medal winner Amber Hall, the journey had just about everything. Hall became the second Kiwi representative in three seasons after Kimiora Nati (2018) to be awarded player of the match in the NRL Telstra Women's Premiership grand final. It capped a remarkable return for the Broncos powerhouse, who a fortnight ago feared her season may have been over after a tackle on Isabelle Kelly attracted attention. A one-match ban for a hip-drop tackle in round two gave Hall the week off in last week's win over the Roosters and ultimately added the fire in the belly to repay the faith of her teammates on Sunday. She was at her rampaging best in the 20-10 triumph, scoring a try in the first half and terrorising the Roosters defensive line to finish the game with a try, 154 metres, three tackle busts and three offloads. "I'm still in shock, I just went out there to play for my team and do the job," Hall said. "[The week off] was good, I mean it wasn't good watching the team play, but it helped me, even more, to want to be back in the grand final." Hall, who joined the Warriors' five players in coming across to Australia to quarantine last month in a bid to join the Broncos, said the club's culture had driven her to return. The Kiwi Ferns representative will return to New Zealand on Tuesday, giving her at least a few days to celebrate with her teammates. "I like the vibe and the culture at the Broncos, it's really good," she said. "I've never been looked after before the way they look after me at the Broncos. "I feel like I'm at home so I wouldn't want to leave. I was telling the girls we're lucky we won because I didn't want to go into quarantine angry." Asked where the humble and quiet forward found her aggression on the field, Hall said growing up with cousins in the backyard was the starting point. "I was brought up with boy cousins so it was rough," she said. "The contact was heaps different this year. I found it harder than last year but the team did good. "I think the competition's they have here in Brisbane and Sydney, it's different because everyone is fitter. "They're stronger and smarter. It comes into the NRLW from club." Broncos coach Kelvin Wright said the award was "well deserved" after her heroics and sacrifices to play for the club this season. "She's been one of the best forwards in the game, an absolute handful," Wright said. "She played the full game and every run I'm sure it takes a lot of energy out of the opposition to tackle her. "She's sacrificed a lot to come over here. She's a massive part of our team, a great character. She's probably a bit of a pest. "There was never any doubt about her. She always wanted to come and we always want to be here. "We'll keep having her back for as long as she wants to." Richmond Rovers Rugby League are currently seeking expressions of interest for a Premier Trainer. Congratulations to our Richmond Rovers rugby league club representatives who will feature in the following competitions:
The Richmond Roses would like to start off by acknowledging our amazing Sponsors who took care of everything off the field which allowed the ladies to concentrate on playing
NAMING RIGHTS MAJOR SPONSOR - Tony Murray Electrical Inspections Tony jumped onboard as a Richmond Roses sponsor in the 2019 season. This season Tony wanted to establish this relationship further & signed on for 2 further years as the Naming Rights Sponsor. The Roses are honoured to have you on the front of their jerseys every time they run out. Tony also does some amazing things with the Club & also out in the Community. Very honoured to have you onboard. CLICK HERE For all electrical inspections MAJOR SPONSOR - Savi Hafoka from Stone Solutions. When the idea was floated to Savi about coming onboard to sponsor the Richmond Roses he was more than willing to not only give back to the game but more importantly the Women's rugby league. Stone Solutions has also signed on for 2 further years as the Roses other major sponsor. Both of these fine men mentioned are also proud Richmond Old Boys. The Richmond Club & the Richmond Roses can not thank you enough for your support and contribution to the team and sport this season. We look forward to continuing this partnership. 2020 SEASON 2020 saw the Tony Murray Electrical Inspections Richmond Roses finish the season in 3rd place (behind Manurewa & Ponsonby) before the season was called off. This season saw 10 players from last years Grand Final team return for another run this season. Although 6 of those players were limited to only 2-3 games max each due to injuries. The Club also saw the rewards of the Richmond Rosebuds Age group system starting to pay off as we had 4 young ladies from the under 18 team progress in to the Richmond Roses. 2 of these young ladies being Maraea Ah Kuoi-Atmore & Rowena Koonwaiyou debuted for the Roses last season). The Roses had 13 players make their Roses debuts this season of which 10 made their debuts in the first game of the season which also happened to be a Grand Final reply against Papakura. With a good young squad one of the goals this season was to develop these players and look to build towards the future whilst at the same time look to establish combinations on the field knowing that we may lose a few players at the business end of the season due to NRLW -as the covid-19 situation meant the seasons would overlap. The Roses were the only team to beat first place Manurewa this season so we definitely had the squad to match it with the best this season. CLICK HERE to view the Sky Sport coverage of this game. Special mention to Eddie & Quentin at Leaton Performance & Rehabilitation for all the work you did getting these ladies sorted during the week and attended to on game days. CLICK HERE for more information. Finally, a massive thank you to all the Club volunteers for all the work you do behind the scenes to keep the club up and running. Your time, dedication and effort does not go unnoticed. The Coaching Staff of Tammi Wilson Uluinayau, Bee Ceeono-Harden & Teasha Marra for giving up your valued time and time away from your own families (not to mention the countless Zoom Meetings throughout the season) as you all tried to navigate your way through the season. The Richmond Roses crew would like to give a massive shout out and thanks to the following amazing people:
In closing, the Richmond club, Richmond Roses (past & present), family and friends would like to congratulate the 16 players from the Richmond Roses who are continuing on with some code this 2020 year and turning out to play in the NZRL Premiership, NZRL Championship or NRLW competitions. We wish you all the best for your campaigns. ONCE A ROSE, ALWAYS A ROSE SEASON APPEARANCES In 5 games the Roses used 27 players. The awesome Steven Glucina, of LJ Hooker, has just paid a further $1725 sponsorship to support Richmond’s Premier side. Part of Steven’s sponsorship arrangement is that Richmond receives $1725 for every successful property referral from a Richmond member. Isaac Ah Kuoi-Atmore’s company, Landdividers Ltd, referred a client’s Torbay property to Steven, and the property was sold at auction the other day. On the heels of a similar payment to Richmond following the earlier successful sale of the Strickland Family’s property, this is a great example of supporting those who support Richmond, in a win/win for both of us. Please contact Steven (021 888 455) in confidence if you know of a property owner looking to sell or you just have any questions about property and/rental properties. With Auckland remaining in level 2.5 till at least Monday, 14th September, Richmond Rovers have been informed that the remainder of the 2020 rugby league season will now conclude.
As we can understand safety is paramount for all, and we support this in its entirety. However, before we sign off for the season, we cannot go past those who contributed throughout. Richmond Rovers would like to take this opportunity to thank all its amazing players, team management, members, supporters, volunteer’s, and sponsors for their unwavering support over what was an uncertain, interrupted, and frustrating 2020 season. Congratulations to the following teams who placed in the top quarter of their sections and were preparing to take the field for finals footy. A massive effort from you all for getting this far.
Congratulations also to these teams on their valiant efforts this year. Had we not seen the season end abruptly, we have no doubt you would have been in the mix for finals footy.
You have set a great foundation for our club and put us in good stead for a much anticipated 2021 season. Thank you for representing Richmond Rovers with pride. As much as we would have loved to have seen “one more try” at the dog pound, we hope you and your families will stay vigilant and be safe. No doubt we will see many of our bulldogs strapping up once again for their summer codes. We are truly, the Greatest club of All! With regards and best wishes, thank you. A tough encounter was ensured with the Premiers going into the half time with a slim 16-6 score over the Hawks. Thirty-six points in the second half saw Richmond win big 52-18 over Mangere East. Solid performing forwards Sione Ngahe, Captain Casey Lafaele and skilfully half back Maytricx Kauhiva each scoring twice in the win, which keeps Richmond inside the play-off positions after eight games. Thanks to the travelling Hawks for a tough game. The final score did not reflect the effort of the team and Richmond wish you the best for the rest of the 2020 season. Conversions: Sione Moala 6 Click here for TEAM SONG The Tony Murray - Electrical Inspections Richmond Roses ventured out to Prince Edward Park to take on Papakura. Papakura were quick out of the blocks scoring off their second set from an overlap. Off the return set there was some punishing defence led by Ruth Vae and Amber Hall. The Roses were able to force the turnover but were unable to secure possession themselves handing the ball over. Papakura found themselves in for another try. This conversion was successful to take the home team out to a 10-0 lead in as many minutes. Papakura started to get the upper hand in the battle and found themselves dot down over the line to stretch the lead out to 14-0. Roses’ stand in half Apii Nicholls showed some nice footwork to elude multiple defenders as she cut across the field and get over the try line but unfortunately a double movement in the process meant the try was disallowed. Some good go forward from Natasha Dallow and Amber Hall put the Roses in good attacking position allowing Apii Nicholls to push a grubber through to the in goal area and with some nice pressure from the Roses right side they forced a repeat set. The battle continued with both teams trying to get control. Both teams struggled to retain possession and complete their sets through the back end of the half until Papakura found themselves on the front foot with a couple minutes remaining and were able to cross the line. Kick unsuccessful & half time score was 18-0. The second half got off to a quick start with Papakura scooping on a loose ball and worked their way down the field. The Roses were able to hold them out and work their way down the field on the following set. Apii Nichols put a deep kick through and a good kick chase from her outsides saw the fullback caught in goal to get a repeat set. The Roses were unable to capitalise on the next set with Papakura shutting down the attack. Papakura scored down the edge to push the score out to 22-0. Papakura were hot on attack again and attacking the short side late in the tackle count, pushing through a kick behind the line but fullback Rowena Meleisea was well positioned to secure the ball & attacked the line and getting a penalty to allow the Roses to kick themselves out of the red zone. Possession changed back and forth with neither team able to gain control. The Roses started to get ball movement flowing and managed to link a few sets together to put them in good scoring positions. A nice switch from Apii and a good line run from Amber Hall saw her into space and power over for a try down the right side to put the Roses on the board 22-6. An error from the restart saw Papakura secure possession. A couple of sets later they found a way over the line again to extend the lead out to 26-6. The deep kick restart from Apii Nicholls saw the Roses awarded a goal line drop out. From this restart Natasha took a strong hit up followed by debutant Yasmin Puru-Tongia & then Ake Michael who made a strong carry and allowed the Roses move the ball from right to left with Jess Diamond scoring in the corner. Apii Nicholls slotted the conversion over from the side-line to see the score line now 26-12. A well-deserved win to Papakura. Tries: Amber Hall, Jess Diamond Conversions: Apii Nicholls 2/2 The Stone Solutions Player of the Day went to Lani Latoa-Williams (also taking the 3 points) 2pts – Yasmin Puru-Tongia (Roses Debut) 1pt – Rowena Meleisea Thank you to our amazing sponsors: Tony Murray of Tony Murray Electrical Inspections, Savi Hafoka of Stone Solutions and Marra Family The Roses have next week off with a bye and then will be hosting Manurewa down Grey Lynn Park on Sunday 16th August. Come support our team social at the Grey Lynn Tavern next Saturday 8th August 2020 from 8pm.
It is with great sadness we advise the passing of Richmond Rovers Rugby league & sports club Old Boy Ken Henry. Ken was a former Richmond player in the 1960’s and 1970’s and close friend to former Richmond and Kiwi’s player Ray Williams. Ken has lived on Great Barrier Island for many years now with his wife Diane. Ken was a great person and will be sorely missed. The Tony Murray - Electrical Inspections Richmond Roses played host to local neighbours the Ponsonby Ponies. Ponsonby got out to a quick start scoring early, kick unsuccessful 4-0 to the Ponies. Early in the game two Roses players went down injured in separate incidents whereby the team loss Captain Georgia Hale. The Roses had to regroup after this stoppage in play, and it was Shee Nathan-Wong who was able to find her way over the line to score. Kick unsuccessful 4-4. From the kick restart the Roses failed to secure the ball and possession was handed over to Ponsonby allowing Ponsonby to apply the pressure whereby the Roses defended their try line for consecutive sets. Ponsonby’s defence was up to the task and didn’t allow the Roses many opportunities to get over the half. Eventually Ponsonby were able to find a hole in the Roses defence scoring on the edges. Kick was successful for Ponsonby to take the lead back 10-4. Backrower Madison Bartlett made a breakthrough the mid field before offloading to support runner full back Api Nicholls but were unable to turn the possession into points. Ponsonby were again quick out of the blocks scoring a nice try from their first set making use of their overlap to score down the edge. Kick successful to extend their lead out to 16-4 to Ponsonby. Ponsonby were able to get the upper hand on the Roses and took control for much of the second half running in three more tries with one successful conversion, 30-4 to Ponsonby. The Roses showed glimpses of attacking plays however this was met by some strong defence by Ponsonby who was able to stop whatever the Roses threw at them. Forward Quick thinking from Amber Hall had put up a kick which was charged down which saw her regather the ball and shoot off down the right edge linking up with Shee, Shonny & Madison who made her way down the line only to be cut down short of the try line. The following tackle saw Shontelle Woodman dart under the closing defenders to score by the goal post. Conversion was successful to make the score 30-10 to Ponsonby. Ponsonby taking out a well-deserved, 30-10 win. The Richmond club would like to wish our Captain Georgia a speedy recovery. Richmond Roses Tries - 2 (Shee Nathan-Wong, Shontelle Woodman), Conversions – 1 Apii Nicholls. The Stone Solutions Player of the Day went to Apii Nicholls. Thank you to our amazing sponsors: Tony Murray of Tony Murray Electrical Inspections, Savi Hafoka of Stone Solutions and Marra Family
Played on Sunday 12 July 2020 the Tony Murray Electrical Inspections Richmond Roses headed out to Manurewa in what was always going to be a very physical game. These two teams put on a display in a game that had it all including massive bone crunching tackles and some superb attacking play. The Roses welcomed another two debutants with Shee Nathan-Wong & Jackie Lauaki both making their debuts in the halves and prop positions respectively. The Roses got off to a strong start forcing two repeat drop outs in as many sets. As both teams started to settle in it was the Roses first on the board after Shee Nathan-Wong regathered her own nicely placed grubber kick through the line to score on the right edge. Kick unsuccessful 4-0 to the Roses. Manurewa managed to get a scrum feed from the kick-off after the Roses failed to secure a deep kick which found the side-line 20m out. From the scrum Manurewa spread the ball wide but the Roses defence was up to it forcing the error on the first tackle. The Roses worked their way down the field and camped themselves in forcing three repeat sets in a row. With the Roses putting on the pressure Kaylarnee Meleisea-Murray took the line on, managing to free her hands in the contact for a nicely timed pass to Rowena Meleisea-Koonwaiyou who ran through for a try on the left edge. Kick unsuccessful, 8-0. From the kick restart Manurewa again had success but this time benefiting from a short restart with the Roses knocking the ball on. Manurewa had the scrum feed but some strong contact in the tackle saw them lose it on the first tackle again. The Roses got a good roll on thanks to a strong run from Linda who was always able to get a quick play the ball. The Roses worked their way into their attacking half. Kaylarnee put up a kick up on the final tackle and with some excellent pressure Rowena Meleisea-Koonwaiyou was able to jump above her opposing fullback to catch the ball then flick it off to the captain Georgia Hale who was able to outrun the covering defence to score down the left side. Conversion successful, 14-0 to the Roses. From the restart the Roses went through the motions again trying to work their way out of their half. A nice shift down the short side near halfway saw Georgia Hale, Shonny & Gloria Fiu use the overlap but some great cover defence by Manurewa saw them tackle Gloria out to shut that set down. Manurewa were able to capitalise straight away with some individual skills breaking multiple tackles to score. Kick successful and Manurewa close the gap to 14-6. Before half time it was the Roses Madison Bartlett’s turn to put boot to ball into the in goal where she regathered her own kick to score a try of her own. Kick unsuccessful 18-6 going into half time. Manurewa got out to a good start getting the upper hand early eventually finding there way over. Kick unsuccessful 18-10 to the Roses. Gloria Murray Fiu made a run infield and was able to get the team a penalty after fighting to get up to play the ball. The Roses managed to work their way up the field through the middles. Late in the tackle count it was Madison Bartlett who took the line on and seeing numbers on her left she fired a fine cut out pass right into the hands of our left winger Jess Diamond who dotted down in the corner. Kick unsuccessful 22-10 to the Roses. Manurewa were having success from the kick restarts and it continued with a Roses error from a short restart. Manurewa were again able to capitalise on this error and scored off the same set. Conversion successful 22-16. With only one converted try in it Manurewa started to build momentum and took control at this stage working their way down the field. On the final tackle count Manurewa went to the left edge then put a kick back up to the middles. A bouncing ball saw the Manurewa right side regather the ball shifting it to the right side only to be shut down by some great scramble defence with Jess Diamond leading the way tackling the player out. The following set saw the Roses work their way out in where Georgia drew in the defence, pop a nice ball to Rowena Meleisea-Koonwaiyou who made a break down the side-line only for the referee to call a stop to the game due to an injured player at the previous play the ball. Thankfully, this player was alright. The Roses got the possession back and it went back to the play the ball. Captain Georgia Hale made a big play through the middle with a nice hit and spin to break the line, drew the fullback and passed it out to Madison Bartlett who was in support to run away and dot down for her second try of the game. Conversion successful 28-16 to the Roses. Manurewa were able to strike back straight away with a power set down the field and scoring in the corner. Conversion unsuccessful 28-20 and despite a physical battle in the dying stages of the game the Richmond Roses went on to win. Final score 28-20 to the Richmond Roses. Extremely solid effort today by the whole team which included 11 players having played two games or less for the Roses. A massive thank you to all the supporters for coming out in great numbers today. We look forward to your continued support. This was a very new look Roses team with only four from last year’s Grand Final team taking the field and ten players making their Roses debut today. As expected, it was a very tough and physical battle out there today with some solid defence from both teams. The Roses got out to a good controlled start forcing two repeat sets in the first 10 minutes but unfortunately were unable to convert that into points. Papakura managed to work their way down the field in the next couple of sets and scored in the corner thanks to a well placed grubber kick. The side line conversion successful making it 6-0 to the visiting Papakura side. The tight tussle continued before Papakura found themselves over the try line again with some strong running. Conversion successful 12-0. In the final ten minutes of the 1st half the Roses were able to get on the board with a try to Shontelle Woodman with a conversion to Api Nicholls to close the gap to 12-6. Papakura were quick to reply with a strong run from their prop who scored. Conversion was successful taking it back out to a 12-point lead-18-6 to Papakura. The Roses had the last set before half time, worked their way up the mid field and Maraea Ah Kuoi-Atmore was able to work her way over from dummy half to score under the posts. Api Nicolls converted to close out the 1st half, 18-12 to Papakura. Papakura were able to extend their lead just three minutes into the second half scoring down the edge. Conversion was successful, 24-12 to Papakura. Rowena Koonwaiyou made a 30m break to get the Roses on the front foot however Papakura were strong in defence and were able to close out the set. The Roses were camped on their line for back to back sets, but some strong defence saw them keep their defence line intact. The Roses were able to work their way down the field and put the pressure on Papakura eventually succeeding with Roses captain Georgia Hale scoring a try next to the post. Api converted the try to close the gap to 24-18 to Papakura. The back end of the second half was back to a battle with neither team able to get the upper hand. There was solid defence from both teams which included a dominating hit put on by Rowena Koonwaiyou on one of the Papakura prop forward to shut down a try scoring opportunity. With four minutes to go the Roses put a kick through to the corner however the Papakura winger was able to scoop up the loose ball and run sixty metres down the side line. She was on her way to the try line only to be cut down by Kaiyah Atai who came from across the field. Final score was 24-18 to Papakura -a well-deserved but hard-fought win. Although the result didn’t go to the Roses way it was still a good first hit out for our young ladies and a solid effort by the whole team. Tries: Shontelle Woodman, Maraea Ah Kuoi-Atmore, Georgia Hale. Conversions: 3/3 Api Nicholls Thanks to our Richmond Roses sponsors
This week’s Roses $100 Player of the Day sponsored by SS Solutions:
Maraea played her first game in the hooker role and played a solid 80 minutes. Captain Georgia was present all around the field topping the tackle count with 34 tackles & 14 hit ups. Roses Player of the day points 3 - Maraea Atmore & Georgia Hale 2 - Madison Bartlett (debuted in the second row) 1 - Kaylarnee Meleisea-Murray (debuted in halfback) The Roses Management team would like to congratulate the following ladies who made their debuts for the Roses today:
We also had a small jersey presentation before the game to acknowledge the four Under 18 Rosebuds who have now transitioned into the Premiership Women’s grade. Two of these young ladies Maraea Atmore & Rowena Koonwaiyou debuted for the Roses last season. The jerseys were presented to Maraea Atmore, Kaiyah Atai, Carmel Uhila & Rowena Koonwaiyou by their Under 18s coaches John Nanai & Sam Mamea, along with Under 18s managers Renee Ngamu & Tasha Davie. We must give special mention to ex Kiwi Fern & Club Legend Tasha Davie for all the hard work she has put in getting these girls grades up and running in 2017. Tasha noticed a gap in the game for females and got to work trying to fill that void becoming a visionary and the driving force behind pioneering the girl’s grades starting.
